I have been doing printing, both print on demand or digital printing and offset printing using the traditional plate-making technology for the last three years.

Whenever I talk about offset printing, the immediate reaction of many customers is that it is cheapest to get things printed at Sivakasi. This may have been true at one time, but is no longer so. I recently met a customer, a correspondent in a reputed city school. He was getting the printing of large volume material required for the school in Sivakasi. I requested him to give me an opportunity to give him a quote. In comparison, he found that our quote was lower. This was because, transport of the printed material from Sivakasi accounted for a substantial portion of the cost; it, therefore, made more sense to print in Chennai itself when such facility was available in the city. There are more than 600 offset printing companies in Chennai today, that can take up and execute bulk printing orders.

Higher the volume to be printed, offset printing technology is the handy answer for churning out the required quantity. Plate-making charges, an essential component of offset printing have come down drastically in the last ten years, making it a viable field for many players.

Today, the printing requirement of clients is being catered to by the two means of offset printing and digital printing. The former accounts for about 80 percent of the market with low volume printing by digital technology accounting for the balance of 20 percent. It is being predicted that this trend will be reversed in the coming years, with digital printing taking the larger share of the market. This remains to be seen.
